Human Interactions

The human experience in the Subantarctic is often deeply emotional and long-lasting. How humans relate to and reshape their natural environment is therefore an integral component of the Subantarctic experience.

The key questions we will focus on are:

  • What factors (e.g. media, previous experiences of natural environment, knowledge) have motivated different groups of people (scientists and tourists) to explore this natural environment?
  • How do visitors to Campbell Island imagine and experience this natural environment?
  • What impact do human visitors have on this fragile ecosystem?
  • In what ways do experiences of this natural environment generate concern amongst the individuals who visit it and what kinds of behaviours are motivated by these concerns?
